The Preliminary Phase

Describes the preparation and initiation activities required to create an Architecture Capability including customisation of the TOGAF framework and definition of Architecture Principles

Purpose

The Preliminary Phase is designed as a customized journey of the TOGAF ADM. This journey is predicated on the best practice of developing EA. The ADM is not a linear process model; rather it is a logical method that places key activity steps together for the purpose of understanding the relationship of activity and clarifying information flow. In Table 9 several TOGAF ADM phases are entered iteratively. Partial indicates work only to the extent needed to answer the question at hand. More elaboration can be done in subsequent architecture work.

Objectives

  1. Determine the Architecture Capability desired by the organisation:
    1. Review the organisational context for conducting Enterprise Architecture
    2. Identify and scope the elements of the enterprise organisations affected by the Architecture Capability
    3. Identify the established frameworks, methods, and processes that intersect with the Architecture Capability
    4. Establish Capability Maturity target
  2. Establish the Architecture Capability:
    1. Define and establish the Organisational Model for Enterprise Architecture
    2. Define and establish the detailed process and resources for Architecture Governance
    3. Select and implement tools that support the Architecture Capability
    4. Define the Architecture Principles
